A hammer drill with an air-cushion striking mechanism which has a striker (27) with an axial extension (33) which faces the tool holder (3) and is driven in reciprocating fashion in a cylindrical guide sleeve (25) via an enclosed air cushion, has a stop device which holds the striker (27) in the idle position. This stop device comprises a rubber-elastic annular body (34), secured on the extension (33) of the striker (27), and an annular groove (51) formed in a sleeve element (50) arranged in the interior of the spindle (39). The diameter of the central opening of the sleeve element (50) decreases from the rear end of the sleeve element (50) towards the annular groove (51) and is smaller at the spacing of the annular groove (51) than the outside diameter of the annular body (34). <IMAGE>
