To reduce the resistance which a workpiece (10) experiences when passing along the transport path (11) of a machine tool, air-outlet openings (25, 26) are arranged in the bearing surface (18) of the table (16) and/or in the bearing surface (17) of a lateral block (19), which air-outlet openings (25, 26) produce a compressed-air cushion between the respective bearing surface and the workpiece. The air-outlet openings contain valves which are opened by the workpiece (10) when it is being transported so that compressed air only comes out at those points which are covered by the workpiece. <IMAGE>
