A method for ascertaining whether a human infant is at risk from the sudden infant death syndrome comprising the steps of a) measuring the concentration in a blood sample from the infant of at least one of morphiceptin and beta -casomorphin; and b) determining the risk to the infant using the blood concentration measurement(s). Also provided are labelled morphiceptin, labelled beta -casomorphin and a diagnostic kit of value for the performance of the said method.
