The object is to design the sorting of rolled bars which appear in rapid succession downstream of the cold shears in high-productivity rolling plants in such a way that underlengths, defective rolled bars and finished lengths are sorted out from layers of bars comprising a large number of bars or sections of relatively small cross-section and from those comprising a relatively small number of bars or sections of relatively large cross-section, without impairing the continuous flow of material, and to do this rapidly and selectively in various directions. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that a driving device situated in a roller table and comprising an upper transversely displaceable and lowerable and selectively driveable or loose disc roller and a driver roller situated in the roller table is combined with a lifting device and a device for holding in a raised position, and is arranged in front of a stop which can be extended into the roller table and lies in the delivery direction of the layers of rolled bars transferred by a chain-type cross-conveyor. <IMAGE>
