The optical switch consists of two ceramic parts made from piezoelectric ceramic material, in which optical waveguides are embedded. One ceramic body (5) is joined in a two-dimensional fashion to a substrate (1), while the other ceramic body (2) is a part of a flexible element made from the ceramic body (2) and the metal plate (3). The flexible element (2, 3) is mounted on the substrate (1) at the end averted from the other ceramic body (5). The optical waveguides (7 or 8) embedded in the ceramic bodies (2 or 5 respectively) are situated opposite one another on the same optical axis such that the light flux can pass over from one optical waveguide into the others. By applying a voltage to an electrode arranged on the ceramic body of the flexible element (2, 3), and to the metal plate (3), the end of the flexible element (2, 3) situated opposite the ceramic body (5) is bent away from the substrate (1), and the light flux between the optical waveguides (7, 8) is interrupted. Multiple switches and changeover switches can also be constructed in the same way. By producing the ceramic bodies (2) and (5) from a single ceramic part with a capillary duct and sawing the part after the insertion of an optical waveguide in the duct, adjustment of the ends of the two optical waveguides with respect to one another is rendered superfluous. It is possible in this way to obtain very simple optical switches which are easy to produce. <IMAGE>
