The invention relates to a method for splicing glass fibre units, in which before the preparation of the end faces of the fibres (4), the fibres (4), which are situated in V-shaped grooves (3), are slightly melted at one point in order to eliminate torsional stresses, which are no longer present in the welded fibre (4) after preparation of the end faces of the fibres (4). In order to achieve this, the device according to the invention has 2n V-shaped grooves (3) on each retaining plate (1 and 2) for n fibres (4) of a fibre unit (13), of which only every second V-shaped groove (3) of a retaining plate (1 and 2) is occupied by a fibre (4) of a fibre unit (13). The cutting or scribing device (6) forms part of the splicing device and can be displaced therein at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the fibres (4) situated in the V-shaped grooves (3). <IMAGE>
