Animal feed contg. halo-alkyl-benzyl phenol - as antiseptic to prevent or treat gastrointestinal infections

The feed comprises a standard nutritional base plus halogenated alkyl-benzyl phenole (I) as antiseptics. (I) is esp. 2-chloro-6-methyl-4 -benzylphenol (Ia) but also useful are 2-bromo-6-(methyl or ethyl) -4-benzyl; 2-chloro-6-methyl-4-(4-tert. butyl or isopropyl) benzyl-; 4-chloro-2-methyl-6-(4-tert. butylbenzyl)- or 4-chloro-2-ethyl-6-(4 isopropylbenzyl)-phenols. (I) are useful as proplylactic antiseptics and for treating in infections of the gastrointestinal tract (or of other organs e.g. the lung, which can result from such infections). The compsns. also have an ergotropic action, eliminate the need for treatment with antibiotics and improve the animals growth. The ergotropic and growth improving effects continue for a relatively long time after administration of the compsn. has ceased.
