A process for removing oxides of nitrogen from effluent gases by catalytic redn. of the nitrogen and binding of the oxygen, comprises (a) impregnating active carbon with one or more alkali (ne earth) metal cpds., (b) activating the impregnated carbon under inert, reducing or weakly oxidising conditions at a temp. of ca. 500 deg.C, (c) using a carbon to metal ratio of 10-200, esp. 20-80 and (d) passing the effluent gas over the catalyst at a temp. of more than 100 deg.C.
