<p>Tumbling media for barrel finishing comprising shapes of relatively uniform size and shape are prepared by depositing droplets of a flowable permanently settable composition on a flat surface, hardening the composition and then collecting the hardened shape from the surface. Suitable settable compositions are thermosetting resins, vitrifiable ceramics or moisture curable ceramics all of which, after setting are insoluble in hot water, even under acid or alkaline conditions, and resist permanent deformation at pressures of at least 50 psi. During deposition they have a viscosity at pressures of at least 50 psi. During deposition they have a viscosity of 500-30,000 p measured on a rotating spindle viscometer at 2 r.p.m. The settable composition may optionally contain abrasive particles such as alumina, zirconia, titanium carbide and silica. The av. size range of such particles is usually between 1 and 500 mu.</p> |
