PURPOSE:To enable black display on a white or colored background by fixing a polarizing plate to the incident side of a base, providing a reflective plate on another polarizing plate deviated in the polarizing direction from said plate, on the reverse side of liquid crystal, and arranging another base. CONSTITUTION:An accumulation type liquid crystal 1 positive in dielectric constant anisotropy are interposed between both bases 2, 3 to form a liquid crystal cell, a polarizing plate 4 is attached to the incident side base 2 of a simple X-Y matrix refreshment accumulation type liquid crystal display element utilizing the nematic-cholesteric phase transition of the liquid crystal 1, and across the liquid crystal 1, a reflective plate 6 is attached to another polarizing plate 5 fixed to the base 3 deviated in the polarizing direction from said plate 4. At least one of the polarizing plates may be colored, and also the plate 6 or the liquid crystal 1 may be colored. A positive type display colored on the background can be obtained by selecting coloration of one of the bases, the plate 6, or the liquid crystal 1, or deviation of the polarization direction of the plates 4, 5.
