In dissolving burnt-up nuclear fuels in nitric acid, it is essential to ensure a uniform discharge of exhaust gas in order to remove pollutants from the exhaust gas produced. This is achieved if the comminuted nuclear fuels are added to water or to nitric acid with a concentration of up to 3 M, the latter is heated to boiling point and 10 M to 14 M nitric acid is added. The amount of nitric acid added is rendered constant by measuring a conductive gas or a radioactive conductive isotope in the exhaust gas and the liquid volume in the dissolving apparatus is kept constant by removing water by distillation.
