A device of a video recorder allows the recording speed to be automatically detected and the replay speed to be continuously selected, in that pulse sequences of a speed pick-up and a synchronisation-pulse read head are processed via logical circuit elements, buffer stores and comparison with predetermined fixed values, in such a manner that one of two displays responds and a digital control unit receives the result of the comparison and uses it for generating a correction for the capstan motor.
