A method for producing activated carbon, and for its reactivation by means of activation gases, which is particularly suitable for intermediates from lignite or peat. The intermediate, which has been dried in a preliminary stage, in the main stage is heated by a power gas flowing through it, which was generated from natural gas combusted with a substoichiometric amount of air and with the addition of steam. The discharged reaction gas, which is loaded with substances from the intermediate, is combusted in the process with the addition of air, for the purpose of generating heat for the preliminary stage. In the process, the reaction gas mixture formed in the main stage is used to generate, by partial combustion with a substoichiometric amount of air, a hydrogen-containing process gas for the preliminary drying stage.
