A fuel injection pump for multi-cylinder internal combustion engines is described, which has a pump and distributor piston (17) and a cam plate (12) driving this in a rotary-reciprocating movement. The cam plate (12) rotationally fixed to the drive shaft (11) obtains its reciprocating movement due to the rolling of end cams (13) arranged on the cam plate (12) on rollers (14) of a fixed cam roller ring (15). For the purpose of detecting the start of fuel metering after a certain stroke of the pump and distributor piston (17) a shaft coder (27) is provided which has marks (29) arranged on the circumference of the cam plate (12) or a part (30) turning synchronously with this and a detector (28) sensing the marks (29), which detector is fixed on the cam roller ring (15). The stroke of the pump and distributor piston (17) is thereby detected indirectly by measuring the angle of rotation ( alpha ) of the cam plate (12). <IMAGE>
