The invention relates to a method and a device for producing an endless cigarette rod, from which cigarettes are continually severed. To this end, a first concave half-rod and second concave half rod are continually formed; the two concave half-rods are then continually joined together in such a way that the concave regions are facing one another, so that a zone in which the density is at least less than that of the outside region is formed in the inner region of the rod. Then the rod is compacted in a conventional fashion to the cross-section of a cigarette and is enclosed by the enclosing strip (strip of cigarette paper). Once the strip of cigarette paper has been glued together and the glue seam has solidified, the cigarette rod is complete and ready for cigarettes to be severed from it.
