In a solar cell having a p-n junction on the front of the semiconductor body, said p-n junction also extends onto the edge of the semiconductor body and is therefore located not only on one principle surface at the front but also on the edge surface of the semiconductor body. The edge region of the p-n junction is intended for irradiation with light.
