The invention relates to the use of surface aerators (1), operating by the pump principle, as mixing devices, for which purpose the surface aerator (1) is submerged in the liquid to the extent that its outlet orifice (5) is submerged. For this lowering, an arrangement is proposed which has a floodable float (7) and a plurality of floats (16) arranged radially further out which are attached to outriggers (14) via chains or the like (17) so that they are arranged higher than the floodable float (7) when the surface aerator (1) is submerged. <IMAGE>
