An interference suppression element, in particular for ignition systems in internal combustion engines is proposed, which serves to prevent the propagation of interference influences in the ignition system and additionally, in an electronic ignition system, protects the components from damage which can be caused by negative voltage peaks which arise when the ignition system is switched off. The said element contains a polarity-reversal protection which limits the current to a harmless value even when there is negative voltage in the system caused by reversal of the polarity of the battery. The interference suppression element (9) comprises a capacitor (10) which is located in the shunt (8) to the primary winding (3) of an ignition coil (4) and is combined with a diode (14) and a resistor (18) to form an assembly.
