Bags are cut from a continuously moving web (10) to form a stack 11L, and, when the stack is complete, it is transferred to a removal conveyor (30). During transfer of the stack, the stack is clamped by a leading-end clamp (20), and pressed by a low mass, low drag wire (33). Clamp (20) provides an initial brief, sharp movement, followed by a less brief less sharp stroke to bring the stack to position 11R on the conveyor during which transfer, one or more bags provide an air shield to the stack. The wire (33) moves with bags stacked above it to give a stroking action to the lowermost of these bags whilst clamping bags in a stack being removed. In a modification there are two wires which rotate about a common axis and respectively act as drag member for successive stacks. <IMAGE> |
