<p>A seal for a piston rod (1) in a low speed diesel engine. The seal comprises a stuffing box (2) in a diaphragm (3) between the scavenge chamber (4) and the crankcase (5). The stuffing box has a shedder ring (7) at the top and the bottom, a series of scraper rings (15) in grooves (12, 13, 14) within the stuffing box bore, pair of sealing rings (28, 29) in a groove (27), and an annular space (21) containing a barrier gas at a pressure higher than that of the scavenge chamber (4) and the crankcase (5).</p> |
