The latching mechanism is provided to lock a longitudinally movable drive element 2 for a turn-and-tilt window or door in position, when the sash or door is opened, and includes a two-arm lever 5 pivotal between a locking position and a release position. The lever 5 is mounted by a hook-like portion 12 which engages the edge of a slot 11 formed in a cover plate 1 and retained in position by means of an abutment 13 on the cover plate 1.
