<p>1,261,053. Pneumatic tyres. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. 24 July, 1969 [26 July, 1968], No. 37321/69. Heading B7C. A circumferential belt, 4<SP>1</SP> or 6<SP>1</SP> for a radial or cross ply tyre, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) respectively, comprises mutually parallel rows of aligned lengths of cord 12<SP>1</SP> embedded in an elastomeric matrix, the rows of cords being disposed at an angle of between 0 and 20 degrees to the mid-circumferential plane of the tyre. The spaces between cords in adjacent rows are circumferentially off-set with respect to each other. The belt may also contain uniformly dispersed filaments, preferably oriented, and disposed in a direction parallel to the cords. The cords may be between “ and 6 inches long and the cords and fibres may be of rayon, nylon, polyester, glass, cotton, or metal. The cords may be of unequal lengths, and treated to achieve a particular level of adhesion with the elastomeric composition. The tyre may have one, two, or more belt plies, and where one ply has cords disposed at an angle to the mid-circumferential plane, another ply is provided with an equal but opposite angle. The plies may be made by manually placing the cords on a calendered sheet of an elastomeric compound, upon which an additional sheet is then calendered. Alternatively conventional corded ply may be calendered and then its cords cut manually or automatically at regular intervals.</p> |
