<p>Prepn. of a latex of a low sulphonated, low unsatn. butyl rubber or EPDM elastomer comprises: (A) providing a cement of elastomer and a volatile solvent; (B) sulphonating the cement with an acyl sulphate sulphonating agent; (C) passivating the sulphonated cement with an at least stoichiometric amt. of an peoxide contg. at least one reactive oxirane gp.; (D) providing an emilsion in water of the prod. of step (C) in neutralised form using an anionic surfactant, the prod. being neutralised with a weak base before or after emulsification and (C) stripping off excess water and solvent to leave a stable latex emulsion. Latexes may be prepd. without the disadvantages of using alcohol passivating systems for the sulphonation reaction to give finished latex compsns. of excellent tensile properties useful as binders for non-wonven fabrics, as adhesives, in paper coating and as overdips for highly unsatd. rubber parts.</p> |
