PURPOSE:To obtain excellent scale removing effect and corrosion preventing effect, by adding a hydrolysate of a copolymer with a number average M.W. of 1,200-10,000 consisting of 75-95mol% of maleic anhydride and 5-25mol% of olefin to water. CONSTITUTION:75-95mol%, pref., 80-90mol% of maleic anhydride and 5- 25mol%, pref., 10-20mol% of olefin are subjected to precipitative polymerization reaction in a solvent by a known method, for example, by using a free radical initiator at 30-200 deg.C and, after a copolymer and the solvent are separated by evaporation or other method, said copolymer is hydrolyzed to obtain a hydrolysate thereof having a number average M.W. of 1,200-10,000, pref., 1,500-5,000. i This hydrolysate is added to water in an amount (solid wt.) of 0.1-1,000ppm, pref., 5-100ppm as a scale inhibitor. |
