<p>A welding tool incorporates an electrically heated probe at one end of a hollow shaft which can both flex longitudinally and rotate. The probe is mounted in a head of conductive metal supported by a flexible tubular shaft which is driven from an in-line bearing block at the other end of the shaft. The shaft, bearing and head incorporate passages for circulating coolant and for discharging inert gases in the vicinity of the probe tip and weld zone. The shaft is pref. made of nylon or PTFE, and usually has >=1 sleeve bearing of PTFE for low friction support when turning within a metal tube being welded internally. The drive end bearing block has a body made partly or wholly of e.g. Tufnol (RTM - paper filled phenolic moulging material). Adaptors of PTFE may be incorporated between the shaft and the welding or bearing heads.</p> |
