<p>A process is claimed for mfg. dense paper by (i) advancing a paper web of dry, uncalendered density about 7 to about 11 lbs/mil. between opposite surfaces; (ii) impregnating the advancing web by applying to both surfaces excess of an aq. dispersion contg. a blend of a rigid polymeric material and an inorganic filler, the blend consisting of 35 to 90% polymer and 10 to 65% filler, each by wt. on wt. of the blend, the polymer having a Tg of 15-60 degrees C; (iii) passing the web between squeeze rolls to ensure penetration of the web by the dispersion and to remove excess dispersion; and (iv) heating web to fuse blend in the web in an amt. of 8.5-50 wt. % of the blend on dry wt. of the web. The paper is oil and solvent resistant, resistant to tearing and burst, is abrasion resistant and has a high folding endurance. It is useful as a cover stock for books and as a carrier for release coatings. It is made by an improved dense paper making process, using high papermaking machine speeds.</p> |
