PURPOSE:To optimize the efficiency of the structure of a yoke-type magneto- resistance (MR) head by setting a ratio of the width of the part, where a yoke and a magneto-resistance element (MR element) overlap, to the width of the MR element to a specific value. CONSTITUTION:An MR element part 7, a yoke front part 8, a yoke rear part 9, a lower shielding high-permeability magnetic material 10, a magnetic recording medium 11, a spacing 12, and a conductor 13 which impresses a bias magnetic field to the MR element part 7 are provided. In this yoke-type MR head, if a width (w) of the MR element is changed, the resistance variation is maximum when ovy1(=ovy2) is 20-40% value of the width (w) of the MR element; and therefore, dimensions of the width (w) of the MR element 7, the width ovy1 of overlap between the yoke front part 8 and the MR element 7, and the width ovy2 of overlap between the yoke rear part 9 and the MR element 7 are set within this range. |
