The invention relates to an electromagnetic actuator including two plates 1, 3 which are capable of a relative movement defining a travel, and a main magnetic circuit with variable reluctance; this actuator includes at least one secondary magnetic circuit whose reluctance can vary during operation, this variation being offset over the travel with respect to that of the reluctance of the main magnetic circuit. The secondary magnetic circuit is defined by a separator 2 arranged between two coiling elements 4, 5, the separator 2 being rigid with the outer plate 1 which carries the coil holders. This actuator makes it possible to act on the curve of variation of force versus travel and it can be used to control a motor vehicle mechanical clutch. <IMAGE>
