[Also in Division C3] A composition suitable for preparing preservative formulations for the treatment of cellulosic materials comprises an intimate mixture of a polycycloparaffinic ketone resin and pentachlorophenol. Preferred ketone resins are prepared from cyclohexanone and contain 5-12 cyclohexanone units. The weight ratio of resin to pentachlorophenol may be 0.5:1.5-1:0.5 This composition may be made up into a formulation by dissolving in a suitable solvent. The solvent is preferably a mild petroleum solvent of which white spirit or kerosene are particularly suitable. Typical preservative formulations comprise 5% by weight pentachlorophenol, 5% cyclohexanone resin and 90% by weight carrier solvent. The formulation may be applied to wood or other cellulosic material by any convenient means, e.g. brushing, spraying, dipping, &c. |
