Process for the preparation of a hydrogen-rich gas by conversion of a gas containing carbon monoxide with steam. The conversion is carried out in the presence of a catalyst which contains a spinel, the composition of which corresponds to the formula CuxMn(1-x)FeyCr(1-y) in which 0 < x < 1 and 0 < y < 2. An alkali metal oxide or vanadium oxide is preferably added to the catalyst. Application to industrial processes for the preparation of hydrogen.
