The invention relates to the cooling of hollow rolls, which are provided with a cooling-water feed tube arranged along the longitudinal axis of the roll and passed through the coolant outlet hole in an axle stub into the interior of the roll, in particular those for roll-type refining machine for the fine comminution of cocoa and chocolate masses, dyes and similar materials to be processed. The object of the invention is to provide an improvement to the cooling of hollow rolls which makes it possible to reduce the level of cooling water in the interior of the roll to a low, constant level. According to the method, a gaseous medium is fed into the roll interior in addition to the cooling water, the quantity of gaseous medium per unit time being greater than the quantity escaping with the discharge of cooling water, the level of liquid in the roll interior being kept constant at a level below the upper edge of the water discharge opening. The main features of the device are that an air delivery tube projecting into the roll interior is arranged on the cooling-water feed tube, parallel to the latter, and extends over a quarter of the roll interior. <IMAGE>
