In a control and shutdown device for a high temperature nuclear reactor (26), which has absorber elements which can be inserted into absorber ducts (82) of the nuclear reactor, the absorber elements have the form of absorber balls (106) which are accommodated in tubes (92) which join the ends of the absorber ducts (82). The absorber balls (106) can thereby be inserted into or extracted from the absorber ducts (62) in a controlled fashion. A compact and simple design is thereby achieved. <IMAGE>
