For the hydraulic expansion of a tube (2) in a surrounding plate (68), a probe (72) bearing two sealing rings (80, 81), situated in grooves (78, 79), and having a conduit (86) for a pressurised fluid leading into the space between the sealing rings (80, 81) and having outlets (84, 85) to the grooves (78, 79) can be inserted into the tube (2). According to the invention, the probe (72) has a smaller diameter over its entire length than the tube (2) to be expanded. It is connected to a thrust hose (31) which leads to the source (32) of pressurised fluid through an advance device (13), and, on the side of the sealing rings (80, 81) which is adjacent to the thrust hose (31), bears an eddy current coil (73, 74). It is thereby possible to achieve a precisely positioned expansion (90) despite the fact that the probe can be inserted deep into the tube (2) by means of the thrust hose (31). The invention is suitable particularly for the expansion of steam generating tubes in the region of plates, spacers or the like. <IMAGE>
