In an adjustable chair with a variable seat and backrest inclination and with an adjustable foot support, the seat is fastened to the frame by means of link chains arranged on both sides of the seat with in each case two connecting rods supporting the seat. Furthermore, the backrest is attached to the seat in an articulated manner and, for adjusting the chair, a manually actuable lever is provided which acts on at least one of the link chains and, via the latter, also on the adjustment mechanism of the foot support. To simplify the chair, the lever (13) is arranged on the seat (2), below it, in such a way that its power arm is directed obliquely forwards and downwards in the chair seating position. Furthermore, a flexible pulling member (21) which is directed upwards and extends beyond the seat (2) is arranged on the power arm of the lever, and the work arm of the lever is connected to the connecting rods (7, 8) of the link chains via a bar (15) in such a way that, when the pulling member (21) is pulled upwards, the lever (13), via the bar (15), initiates a forward pivoting movement of the connecting rods (7, 8) of the link chains from their rear end-position. <IMAGE>
