In a method for controlling the temperature when carrying out a reduction process, especially for iron ores in a rotary kiln which is provided with sheathed nozzles (2) distributed over the kiln length and measurement probes (7) associated with these, combustion air and/or oxygen being added in the individual sheathed nozzles (2) under control by values measured by means of the measuring probes (7), a reliable adjustment of the temperature values desired at particular points in the kiln is obtained in such a way that the oxygen potential at the particular point in the kiln is determined by means of suitable values measured by the measuring probes (7) and the temperature control is based on these.
