A lubricating oil filter for an internal combustion engine has a filter housing with two chambers for the accommodation of a main and a back-up lubricating oil filter. Up to a predetermined lubricating oil pressure the lubricating oil fed to the first chamber by the main lubricating oil filter, after flowing through the main lubricating oil filter, is fed directly back into the lubricating oil circuit of the internal combustion engine. With increasing contamination of the main lubricating oil filter the lubricating oil pressure rises and on attainment of the predetermined lubricating oil pressure the lubricating oil is fed out of the first chamber by way of a bore, which has a shut-off member actuatable as a function of the pressure, to the second chamber and from there, after flowing through the back-up lubricating oil filter is fed back into the lubricating oil circuit of the internal combustion engine.
