The invention relates to an apparatus for the distribution of short, stiff, loose metal fibres in the form of a layer or mat with the fibres essentially aligned longitudinally on a surface. This apparatus includes a fibre (supply) container (1) with an outlet (8) provided at the lower end, the fibre container (1) receiving a mass of the metal fibres (5) and discharging them under gravity through the outlet (8) on the bottom side, and is inclined at an angle to the horizontal such that the fibres can move downwards freely without compression or clumping together in the outlet region, and also an oscillating feed roller (3) arranged at the lower end of the fibre container (1) with numerous projections (4) projecting outwards towards the walls on the outlet side. The feed roller (3) closes the outlet (8) to a free passage of the loose fibres, and the projections (4) reach into the fibre mass in the fibre container (1) and pull the fibres out of the fibre mass as the feed roller (3) turns and deliver them in a random distribution to an (inclined) surface (e.g. 6) for the deposition of the fibres as a fibre layer or mat (10). <IMAGE>
