An embossing tool has a housing (1) and a ram (6) mounted so as to be axially displaceable therein. The ram (6) carries out a reciprocating lifting movement, driven by a motor, and, if required, a rotary movement at the same time. The lifting movement of the ram (6) is derived from a rotating drive element via a cam drive. In particular, an end-side cam oriented transversely to the lifting direction of the ram (6) can be picked off by an arrangement of rollers (25). The drive connection to a motor is produced via an elastic coupling or flexible shaft. The ram (6) operates at about 150 embossing strikes per second. <IMAGE>
