An openwork wall which can be used as a supporting wall, a sound-proofing wall or the like is and back-filled with earth, is formed from a number of building elements (1) arranged in layers next to one another and above one another. The building elements (1) comprise, for their part, in each case a stretcher element (2) which is arranged on the outer side of the openwork wall and determines the contour thereof, and which is connected, by two webs (3, 4) extending at right angles to it and one anchoring element (5) joining the ends of said webs in a U-shape, to a monolithic prefabricated compound unit of reinforced concrete. The building elements (1) are arranged with respect to one another in such a way that the webs (3a or 4b) of the building elements (1a or 1b) of one layer are positioned in each case with their lower faces on the upper faces of the webs (4 or 3) of the building elements (1) of the layer below.
