A boiler (10, 10 min ) which is designed to be fired by oil and/or gas comprises a water cooled combustion tube (12, 12 min ) closed at one end (13, 13 min ) and located within a water space (16, 16 min ) of the boiler, is connected to a solid fuel fired boiler by an auxiliary furnace (11, 11 min ) having a combustion chamber (25, 25 min ) with means (27, 27 min ) to introduce solid fuel into the combustion chamber (25, 25 min ), and an opening (15, 15 min ) in the wall of the combustion chamber (25, 25 min ), the opening (15, 15 min ) having an extension nozzle (33, 33 min ) extending therefrom whereby hot gases may pass from the extension nozzle (33, 33 min ) of the furnace (11, 11 min ) into the combustion tube (12, 12 min ) of the boiler (10, 10 min ) at a position intermediate the ends (13, 13 min , 14, 14 min ) of the combustion tube (12, 12 min ). |
