At least one of the planetary cooling pipes or ducts is supported by a bracket which is aligned with a swivel mounting fixed on the outside of the furnace casing; a pivot shaft is then inserted in holes provided in both the bracket and the swivel mounting. The axis of the pivot shaft is located at 90 degrees to the axis of the rotary drum furnace and the axis of the cooling pipe mounted on the pivot shaft. Two coaxial pivot shafts may be used in one swivel mounting. The swivel mountings permit the axial and radial displacement of the planetary cooling pipes w.r.t. the furnace casing, so that the thermal expansion and contraction of the furnace and the cooling pipes do not create stresses which could result in the fracture of the various components.
