Spiral spring tensioning system for engine starter - has spring tensioned by kick start turning driving chain via free-wheel coupling

The kick start lever (2) is fixed to a free rotating shaft (1) on the machine frame. A free-wheel coupling (11) enables a rotating driving sprocket (4) turning on the kick start shaft (1) to turn a driven sprocket (5) fixed to the engine crankshaft (9) via a chain drive (6). The inner end of a spiral spring (10) is secured to the engine shaft (7) and the outer end is fixed to a frame member (9). A ratchet (21), tensioned by a spring (22), engages with the kick start sprocket outer teeth (4) to prevent the coil spring from unwinding until required. A release lever (24) disengages the ratchet from the sprocket teeth.
