A coating or impregnating compsn. comprises (a) an aq. soln. or dispersion of a vinyl addn. polymer (I); (b) 1-200 wt. % based on the polymer, dicyclopentenyl (meth)acrylate (II); and (c) a drying agent. Pref. (II) contains 50-100 wt. % (I) and 0-50 wt. % of (1) 10-20C aliphatic (meth)acrylic esters, (2) 10-20C aliphatic acid vinyl esters, and/or (3) dialkyl esters of maleic, fumaric and itaconic esters, the alkyl contg. 1-8C. The compsn. pref. contains a volatile stabiliser based on aldehyde- or ketone oxime. (I) acts as a viscosity regulator in the case of aq. solns of water soluble polymers and avoids the use of excessive dilution with e.g. water for application purposes. In the case of aqs. dispersions (II) as a coalescing and hardening agent and alos as viscosity regulator. Coatings are hard, strong and resistant to water and chemicals. |
