The system for chlorinating a liq., e.g. water in a swimming pool or drinking or effluent water, comprises an electrolytic cell with at least one anode compartment and corresponding cathode compartment which are sepd. from one another and have their electrodes connected to a d.c. voltage source. Outlets are provided for hydrogen from the cathode compartments and for chlorine from the anode compartments and means to mix the chlorine with the liq. A metered amt. of an NaCl soln. is supplied to the (anode compartments of the) cell, the electrolyte leaving the (cathode compartments of the) cell via outlet connections. The gas outlets are arranged above the cell and connected to respective collecting lines.
