The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of an ester of a phenoxy alkyl carboxylic acid in which an ester of a volatile carboxylic acid having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule is reacted with the phenoxy alkyl carboxylic acid, preferably in the presence of an acidic catalyst. In an example, 2,4.dichlorophenoxy acetic acid, butyl acetate and toluene sulphonic acid were boiled in a Soxhlet apparatus, reaction mixture washed and the remaining butyl acetate distilled off and 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid butyl ester obtained.
