Alkenes are carboxylated by reacting a mixture of an alkene and CO at elevated temp. in the absence of added hydrogen halide and in the presence of added hydrogen halide and in the presence of a rhodium carbonyl, or a cpd. giving a rhodium carbonyl under the reaction conditions, dissolved in a liquid reaction medium. Gives high yields of lower carboxylic acids hydrogen halides are not used in the process. Relatively low reaction temps. and pressures are used. The catalyst is pref. a rhodium carbonyl chloride. The feed is a 2-8C alkene, pref. ethylene. Carboxylation is carried out at 70-210 degrees C and a pressure up to 200 atm. with a CO/alkene ratio of 2-100:1.
|
