PURPOSE:To provide a flame retarder for flexible polymeric materials which is harmless because it is insoluble in various org. solvents and has excellent stability because it will not be thermally molten, by attaching bromine atoms to a crosslinked arom. polymer. CONSTITUTION:30-70wt% (per unit weight of polymer) bromine atom is attached to a crosslinked arom. copolymer obtd. by crosslinking a coplymer of an arom. monovinyl compd. and a polyvinyl compd. or a linear arom. polyvinyl compd. to obtain a flame retarder. A brominating agent such as sulfuryl bromide or molecular bromine is reacted with the crosslinked arom. copolymer in the presence of a catalyst, pref. ferric chloride. The resulting brominated copolymer is washed, dried and crushed into a powder having a particle size of 0.1- 10mu by using a hammer mill. 5-10pts.wt. said retarder is added to 100pts.wt. synthetic resin. |
