Selected parts of a mass of human hair are dyed to one or more different shades from the remainder of the hair by means of one or more dyes which dye or each of which dyes is formed by chemical reaction between a compound of a first type and a compound of a second type the process comprising (1) applying to at least a part of the mass of hair a first component containing (a) at least one compound of the first type or (b) at least one compound of the second type, or (c) at least one compound of the first type and at least one compound of the second type with a stoichiometric excess of the compound of the first type or of the second type and (2) applying to selected parts of the hair to which the first component has been applied a second component containing at least one compound of the first type when the first component contains a stoichiometric excess of the compound of the second type and at least one compound of the second type when the first component contains a stoichiometric excess of the component of the first type. Compounds of the first type may be oxidation dyes or diazonium salts and compounds of the second type may be colour couplers. Preferably each component is in the form of an ammoniacal solution, dyeing may be effected in presence of an oxidising agent e.g. hydrogen peroxide. |
