发明名称 FORMATION OF END LENS FOR OPTICAL WAVEGUIDE
摘要 PURPOSE:To form easily a lens by covering the entire rear surface and a part of the front surface of a glass base plate with electrodes, dipping the glass plate into molten salt, impressing voltages to both electrodes and subjecting the same to a glass ion exchange thereby constituting a semicircular lens part at the end of the electrode on the front surface. CONSTITUTION:An electrode 12 is provided over the entire rear surface of a glass base plate 11 and an electrode 13 is provided on the front surface from the end 11a to the position of a length l. The end 13a of said electrode is made perpendicular to the plate 11. The plate 11 is dipped in molten salt 14 and voltages +, - are impressed to both electrodes, then the univalent metallic ion 14a in the salt 14 enters the inside of the plate 11 and is exchanged with the univalent ion in the plate 11. The front surface 15 of the plate 11 exchanged with the metallic ion 14a serves as a high refractive index part and forms an optical waveguide (b). The glass ion exchange progresses deeply in the end 13a of the electrode and forms a semicircular shape 16. The shape 16 forms a lens. The lens is thus integrally formed to the top end of the optical waveguide, by which mass production is made easy and the cost is reduced.
