The device is used for forming counted batches from a stack of adjacently located can lids conveyed forward in a guide trough. A counting device for the can lids is provided which consists of a counting wheel with counting fingers which have the same angular distance from one another which corresponds to a predetermined multiplicity of can lid thicknesses. Furthermore, a separating device with a carriage displaceable parallel to the guide trough is also provided, which carriage can be pivoted into the displacement path of the can lids by means of a carrier or can be pivoted out of this path of advancement. The counting wheel controls the pivoting of the carriage guide and the reciprocal displacement of the carriage.
